Jesus Walks on the Water
Mark 6:45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
Mark 6:46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
Mark 6:47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
Mark 6:48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
Mark 6:49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:
Mark 6:50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
Mark 6:51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
Here we have a scene where Jesus told his disciples to get into the ship and to sail to the other side of the lake to Bethsaida while He goes into a mountain to pray. Jesus was on land and His disciples were in the boat alone. But when they were in the middle of the lake a storm arose and Jesus could see them battling and straining at the oars. So He comes walking on the waters telling them that it is I, do not be afraid. Then he got into the boat and calmed the storm.
There is some more information in Matthew’s gospel where Peter tells the Lord that if it is Him, command me to come to you, and Jesus said: “Come.” Peter began to walk on the water, but when he saw the winds and the waves, his faith faulted and began to sink. Peter cried out to the Lord: “Save me.” And Jesus stretched out His hand and grabbed him, saying: “you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
In the Old Testament we read about God our Creator who spreads out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
Job 9:7 Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
Job 9:8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
Here in Job 9:8 Job declares that God has the ability to tread on the seas. Which infers that Jesus has the same ability and so is Divine.
In another incident on the lake, Jeus was asleep at the back of the boat and a severe squall came upon them.
Jesus Calms a Storm
Matthew 8:23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
Matthew 8:24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
Matthew 8:25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Matthew 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
In Psalm 107 there is a prediction that the Lord calms storms and stills he seas..
Psalm 107:28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
Psalm 107:29 He makes the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
Q: Were the disciples in distress? Yes.
Did they cry out to the Lord? And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Did the Lord calm the seas and brought them out of their trouble?
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
This shows that Jesus is the Lord. The Hebrew word for Lord is Jehovah.
