Abraham, Isaac and Christ By Elder G. Mordaunt

In the Old Testament many of the Biblical Characters when you study their stories and lives, are in one sense, types of Christ.

Take Abraham and Isaac for instance? In the story in Genesis 22 God tested Abraham and told him to take his only Son Isaac and take him to the region of Moriah to sacrifice Him there. So they loaded up a donkey with wood and left their camp to go where the Lord had said to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering.

In a greater sense, God the Father sent Jesus His Son to become a sacrifice for us.

Some of the symbols are quite striking.

In this story Abraham and Isaac they were headed for Mt Moriah

In Luke 9:51. Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

In the story Genesis 22: 3 a donkey was involved.

In Matthew 21:1,2 Jesus tells His Disciples to untie a donkey from its stall so He could ride upon it.

In Genesis 22:6. Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering upon his son. Isaac was a type of Christ.

In John 19:17 Jesus carried his own wooden cross and he went out to the place of the skull.

Also in Genesis 22:13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught up In a thicket and he sacrificed it.

In the New Testament Jesus had a crown of thorns from a thicket placed upon His head. Matthew 27:29

So looking at the Biblical characters you have Abraham who in a sense represents God the Father.

 Isaac His Son represents Christ, who is God’s Son.

So we see here a preview of the plan of Salvation played out 1872 years before Jesus died on the cross.

In this story, God stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. But in Jesus case

God allowed Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sins. Jesus is the perfect Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world.

One of the amazing statements made way back in Genesis 22:7,8

7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, My father. And he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering. So they both went together.

John the Baptist recognised this when he said as he saw Jesus passing by:

John 4:36 And looking upon Jesus as He walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God!

Jesus is the true Lamb that was slain. God did supply the perfect Lamb for us. All we have to do is to accept Jesus and His sacrifice for our pardon from our sins. The invitation is there. Place yourselves in His hands and go, follow Him.

John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will in no way cast out.

Jesus will never turn anyone away. As sinful as your past life may have been, Jesus still loves you and wants you in His Kingdom. The choice is ours.
